SEE SOUND: REAL-TIME AUDIO VISUALIZATION

PROJECT OVERVIEW

SEE SOUND is a custom piece of software that allows users to visualize audio in real-time. A 4-track system gives users the ability to record nested layers of audio data. The resulting effect is a sculptural data visualization that is entirely unique each time.

LOOK DEVELOPMENT

The process started by deciding on general behaviors and materials for different types of audio. Wanting the final results to feel more sculptural than digital, we decided on materials like porcelain, gold, and silver. RMS values were used to drive parameters, such as displacement, frequency, and roughness.


DESIGNING THE SYSTEM

A custom GUI was designed to give the users maximum control during the recording process. 


THE RESULTS

The final results are reminescent of the intital concept art, but far more detailed and complex. Each sculpture tells a unique story and captures a particular moment in time. With enough practice, users are able to use this piece of technology to sculpt with their voices, much in the same way traditional artists use their hands.
